Mine a Planet Best Upgrades — Mining Power, Cargo & Speed
The four things you can upgrade in Mine a Planet, what each one actually does, and how to decide the order without any published cost table.

What can you upgrade in Mine a Planet?
The official game description names three fleet stats directly — "UPGRADE your fleet — speed, cargo & mining power to mine faster" — and a fourth lever, fleet size, is visible in every piece of gameplay footage. Those four are what you actually spend cash on. What the developer has never published is the cost curve behind them: no per-level prices, no percentage gains, no caps. That absence is the whole reason a "best upgrade order" guide is hard to write honestly. What we can do is explain what each stat controls and give you the one structural rule that holds regardless of the hidden numbers, so you can read your own fleet and decide. Fleet maths are modelled in the fleet income calculator, the ordering logic is in the walkthrough, and the multiplier systems stacked on top are pets and mutations.
- Mining Power — how fast a drone breaks voxel ore blocks
- Cargo — how much ore a drone carries before it must return and unload
- Speed — how fast a drone cycles between the ore face and the deposit point
- Fleet Size — how many drones work at once; a direct multiplier on everything above
- Per-level costs and effects for all four are unpublished
The four upgrade levers
| Upgrade | What it controls | When it is your bottleneck | Data basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mining Power | Block-breaking speed at the ore face | When drones spend most of their time chewing a block rather than travelling or unloading | Named in the official game description |
| Cargo | Ore carried per trip before a forced return | When drones fill up and stall — the single most visible waste in the game | Named in the official game description |
| Speed | Travel rate between the ore face and the deposit point | When the round trip is long, which gets worse as you mine deeper | Named in the official game description |
| Fleet Size | How many drones run at once | Almost always early — it multiplies every other stat you have already paid for | Visible in gameplay footage; Drone Packs from codes expand it deterministically |
The one rule that works without a cost table
Watch your drones for thirty seconds and find the one that is doing nothing. A drone in this game is always in one of three states: breaking a block, flying, or waiting to unload. Whichever state your fleet spends the most idle time in tells you which upgrade to buy, and it does so more reliably than any price comparison could — because it is measured on your save, at your depth, with your multipliers. Drones sitting still with a full hold means Cargo or Speed. Drones flying long empty stretches means Speed. Drones grinding away at a single block while the rest of the fleet waits means Mining Power. And if none of them look idle, the bottleneck is not a stat at all — it is that you do not have enough drones, which is why fleet size tends to win early. Fleet Size is also the only lever that multiplies rather than adds: every point of Mining Power you have already bought gets applied again by each new drone.
- Full cargo, drone parked → buy Cargo or Speed
- Long empty flights → buy Speed
- One drone grinding while others wait → buy Mining Power
- Nobody looks idle → buy more drones
- Fleet Size multiplies stats you already own, which is why it compounds hardest early
Upgrades that are not fleet stats
Three other systems raise your output and none of them appear on the fleet upgrade panel. Pets are the biggest: caught with Alien Balls and deployed on dock platforms, they contribute an earnings multiplier plus a global skill — the Legendary pet Skibidi Toilet was observed granting Global Mining Speed +4% stacking to a 25% cap, and a pet upgrade priced at $3.25 trillion at level 36 appears in July 2026 footage, which tells you this system scales into the very late game. Drone mutations are the second: consumable CPU chips you buy in the Gear Shop and apply to a drone, with Clean, Blizzard, Ion, Solar Flare, RadioActive, UFO and JellyFish documented on the mutations page (per-chip shelf prices carry dates there and change between versions). In footage removing a mutation did not hand the chip back, so experienced players hold their best chips for endgame drones rather than burning them on early pulls. Filling the mutation index awards cash milestones that step up to a permanent +25% at 100%. The third is planet evolution, which raises the ore band underneath everything else — covered in full on the evolution calculator page.
- Pets — earnings multiplier plus a global skill; Skibidi Toilet observed at +4% Global Mining Speed, 25% cap
- Pet upgrades scale far into the endgame — a level 36 upgrade priced at $3.25T was seen in July 2026 footage
- CPU chips are consumables applied to drones; Clean, Blizzard, Ion, Solar Flare, RadioActive, UFO and JellyFish are documented, prices listed per-chip with dates on the mutations page
- In footage removing a mutation did not return the chip — save good chips for endgame drones
- Completing the mutation index grants a permanent +25% cash milestone
- Planet evolution raises the ore band beneath every other upgrade
